Speed test

Before calling support, run a test following the steps below. Often the cause is Wi-Fi or the router, and you can fix it yourself in a couple of minutes.

Speed test to our server in Khabarovsk

The test runs to a BRAVO Telecom server inside our network, so it shows the speed of our part of the route - from your router to us. No third-party services or ads.

Short address of the test: st.bravotele.com - type it in your browser to open this page.

For an accurate result, test from a computer connected by cable and close other tabs and downloads.

During the test we save your IP address, the result and the time of the test to monitor connection quality. Records are kept for 90 days. Details are in the Personal Data Processing Policy.

The test runs on LibreSpeed (LGPL-3.0).

  1. 1

    Test over a cable

Connect your computer to the router with a cable. A Wi-Fi test shows the speed of your Wi-Fi, not the internet: walls, neighbors' networks and distance to the router all affect it.

  2. 2

    Close everything else

Stop torrents, updates, streaming and games on all devices at home, and close extra programs and browser tabs on the computer. Otherwise the test shares the line with them.

  3. 3

    Turn off your VPN

If a warning about a VPN or another network appears above the result, the test did not go through our internet. Turn off the VPN or proxy, connect to your BRAVO Telecom home router rather than mobile internet, and test again - that shows the speed of our connection.

  4. 4

    Check your router

Old and cheap routers often cannot pass more than 100 Mbit/s, even over a cable. If your plan is faster, the router itself may be the bottleneck - see below which one to get. Connecting without a router? Read why the speed jumps.

  5. 5

    Check your computer

The network card of an old computer or laptop may also be limited to 100 Mbit/s. Then even over a cable the test will not show more, however fast the network is.

  6. 6

    Test 2-3 times

A single test can come out lower by chance because of background activity on the computer. Repeat the test a few times a minute apart - that shows the real speed.

Connecting without a router, straight from your computer?

In short: get a router, and your speed will be steady.

If our cable is plugged straight into your computer and you go online through the Windows "Broadband connection" with the login and password from your contract, a speed test will almost always show less than your plan, and the results will jump from test to test. This is not a problem with our network.

Why this happens

A connection with a login and password is called PPPoE. When a router handles it, a dedicated network chip inside the router does the work. When Windows handles it, every packet goes through the computer's processor - usually through a single core - without the network card's hardware acceleration. At low speeds you won't notice, but at hundreds of megabits the computer can't keep up and the speed starts to fluctuate.

We tested it ourselves

Same computer, same account on a 1 Gbit/s plan. Through the Windows "Broadband connection" the speed varied from test to test. Through a router it was steady and full, as it should be.

What to do

  • Plug our cable into a router and enter the login and password from your contract in the router settings (connection type: PPPoE). Connect the computer to the router with a cable and test again.
  • On fast plans the router must be gigabit and able to handle PPPoE at full speed - not every budget router can. Look for 1000 Mbit/s (Gigabit) ports and PPPoE support in the specs.
  • If you don't have a router yet, keep in mind that a test through the Windows connection understates the speed and can't be used to judge your internet speed. The same applies to third-party speed tests.

Which router to buy

Customers buy their own router, and we recommend a gigabit Wi-Fi 6 router (Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax). Gigabit ports pass the full plan speed over a cable, and Wi-Fi 6 is noticeably faster and more stable than older standards, especially with many phones, TVs and laptops at home.

Look for this in the router specs: 1000 Mbit/s (Gigabit) ports and Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ax.

How to set up your router

Is there a difference between cable and Wi-Fi at 100 Mbit/s and above?

Yes, there is a difference in speed and stability. A cable gives the maximum possible speed and a steady signal. Over Wi-Fi some speed is lost to interference and distance, but a modern, properly configured router gives speeds close to a wired connection.

If you test over Wi-Fi

Connect to the 5 GHz network if your router has one: it gets less interference from neighbors' networks than 2.4 GHz. And remember that Wi-Fi speed is limited not only by the router but also by the phone or laptop itself: an old device will not reach the speed of a new router.

Large house or apartment

One router cannot cover a large house or a spacious apartment with Wi-Fi, especially with reinforced concrete walls. Then you need a wired local network to the rooms you use and a MESH system: several Wi-Fi points working as one network. That gives Wi-Fi all over the house without dead spots.

Test on speedtest.ru

Opens in a new tab. This is a third-party service, not ours. Choose a server in Khabarovsk there: the farther the server, the more other networks along the way affect the result.

The plan speed is the maximum - "up to": from your router to our external link. Beyond that, data travels over other operators' networks, and we cannot answer for their load.

Followed all the steps and the speed is still well below your plan? Take a screenshot of the result and write or call us - we will sort it out. Phone 8-800-551-00-95, email abonent (at) bravotele.com.
